COMMON project: beach litter activity on the Italian coasts

Macro and microplastic monitoring activities continue on the beaches of the Italian Salento. The monitoring of marine and coastal litter, which is part of the activities foreseen by the EU-funded COMMON project, was conducted on Saturday 18 December 2020 by CIHEAM Bari – as project partner – with the support of the University of Salento – Department of Biological Sciences and Technologies and Environmental – DiSTeBA and the APS Associazione Amanti della Natura, for the collection, the analysis and the differentiation of the waste found.

The activity involved the beach of Gallipoli, near Punta Pizzo, and is the second part of one of the four waste monitoring campaigns that will be carried out by 2022.

Proper waste disposal took place thanks to the support of the municipal administration of Gallipoli.

Salento is one of the five pilot areas involved in the project, together with the Italian Maremma, the island of Kuriat and Monastir in Tunisia and Tyre in Lebanon.
